The Eaton 420 Series pump is popular in moderate-flow, high-pressure mobile applications on vehicles such as compact wheel loaders, telehandlers, rough terrain forklifts, forestry equipment, telescopic booms, sweepers, backhoe loaders, and garbage trucks.
With a pressure rating of 280 bar, it offers outstanding power density delivering up to 100 hp at 2,800 rpm. The pump is offered in 41, 49, 62, and 80 cc displacements.

Eaton’s 420 Series open-circuit piston pump—popular for on- and off-highway applications—will now have even more widespread appeal.
Following exhaustive testing in Eaton’s Engineering Test Facility in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, the 420 Series pump is qualified for use with synthetic biodegradable hydraulic fluid (HEES), according to ISO 6743.
“The qualification of our 420 Series pump with this type of fluid has the potential to enter new markets and emphasizes Eaton’s commitment to delivering green products that protect our environment,” Reddy says.

“Unlike traditional hydraulic fluids that have relatively poor environmental performance, synthetic biodegradable hydraulic fluids have high biodegradability and low ecotoxicity, which minimize pollution in the event of oil leaks in environmentally sensitive areas, such as forests, lumber yards, and wetlands, says Thelma Marougy, principal engineer—lubricant specialist.
Hydraulic system components that are compatible with biodegradable hydraulic fluid are quickly gaining in popularity, says Eaton’s Radhir Reddy, product manager—mobile open-circuit piston pumps.
Test Parameters
Eaton Engineering conducted the in-housing testing of the 420 Series pump using a good-quality, synthetic, biodegradable hydraulic fluid. After 50 consecutive hours of full-flow testing and 200 consecutive hours of cyclic testing at 4,000 psi at 180°F, the results were conclusive: no reduction in component life occurred.
“As a result of the testing, Eaton 420 Series piston pumps are now qualified for use with good-quality, synthetic, biodegradable hydraulic fluid at full ratings, as specified in the product catalog,” Marougy says.
